Why I Love (and Write) Urban Fantasy 🔥🖤

There’s something about urban fantasy that grabs me by the collar and doesn’t let go. It’s the genre where magic collides with motorways, monsters lurk behind corner shops, and the heroes are just as likely to wield sarcasm as they are spells. I love the grit, the tension, the way the supernatural bleeds into the everyday — and I especially love the characters who walk that line.

Two of my all-time favourites? Harry Dresden and Kate Daniels.

  • Harry Dresden, from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, is a wizard-for-hire in Chicago. He’s stubborn, loyal, and constantly in over his head — and I adore him for it. His world is messy and dangerous, and he faces it with a mix of dry humour and relentless heart. Watching him grow across the series is like watching a storm learn to steer. He’s the reason I fell hard for urban fantasy in the first place.
  • Kate Daniels, from Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels Series, is a mercenary in a post-apocalyptic Atlanta where magic and tech battle for dominance. She’s fierce, mouthy, and deeply protective of the people she loves — even when she’s trying not to be. Her journey from lone wolf to leader is raw and powerful, and her world building is some of the best I’ve ever read.

Urban fantasy gives me the kind of stories I crave: high stakes, sharp dialogue, found family, and magic that bites back. It’s the genre where betrayal stings, loyalty matters, and the monsters aren’t always the ones with claws.

It’s also the genre I write. My Death and Visions series lives in that same space — detective noir meets supernatural tension, with one character’s journey unfolding across layered mysteries and emotional fallout. If you love Harry and Kate, I think you’ll feel right at home.
